Australian Macadamia & Almond Cheese Balls
Here is a great Aussie starter including a true Aussie ingredient, Macadamia nuts. Serve this up whilst you are firing up the BBQ!
Instead of serving them with one of your favourite general sauces, try some really old Australian condiments like a Bush Tomato or Quandong flavoured chutney and serve that to your guests. It will give your BBQ a real authentic Aussie twist!
If you are far away from Aussie and you cannot get macadamia nuts, just use almonds instead and double that ingredient. They go well with most chutneys or even tomato sauce and sweet chili sauce.
Ingredients
- 250 g grated mature Australian Cheddar cheese
- 50g plain flour
- 2 egg whites
- 60g blanched almonds slivers
- 60g chopped macadamia or slivers
- Veg oil for deep-frying
Method
- Combine the cheese and flour.
- Beat the egg whites until they form stiff peaks.
- Add the cheese and flour to the egg whites and fold gently. Form into 16 small balls, gently rolling between your fingers.
- Roll the cheese balls in the nuts. The cheese balls may be refrigerated until needed.
- Heat the oil and cook the cheese balls, a few at a time, until golden all over. Take care not to have the oil too hot or the almonds will brown before the center is hot.
- Drain on absorbent paper and serve with a Bush Tomato Chutney.
