Austria and the Alpine region are a wonderful place to travel, with breath-taking scenery and a very tasty cuisine.
The Chef Explorer travelled throughout the country originally in my 1980’s Backpacking Adventure (included in my books). Mainly by the Inter Rail from Innsbruck to Vienna and enjoyed the ski slopes as well as the history of Vienna and its huge St Stephen’s Cathedral. I also spent time in the Mozart town of Salzburg, a region where the ‘Sound of Music’ movie was filmed. The food also went down very well from devouring many hearty Schnitzel’s to Apple Strudel.
Then we returned more recently in 2018 to explore the Christmas Markets of Europe, starting in Vienna. It was freezing in Europe, of course in December, so we had to wrap up well.
The ‘Christkindl markets’ are fantastic and getting in the festive mood, we jumped onto the Big Wheel – oh no, it was even colder up there! (see my photo & faces!). So, we needed hot Glühwein to warm us up! And for dinner we tucked into a real Viennese Schnitzel again before going to the famous Café Sacher in search of the delicious ‘Sachetorte’ for dessert.
